Got it working with Pidgin (free).  It seems that:

1) I missed an error message which was ambiguous
2) It took about 2 minutes to load which I suspect is because of the IDENT port 113 warning when trying to launch from a browser.

Note for anyone else trying to use PIDGIN (and maybe any IRC product).  You only need the server and channel (above).  No password and the id can be anything, not necessarily your Brooks Id.
